Philippines Coast Guard Auxiliary Squadron 609 was found in 1987 by RADM Leonard Tirol PCGA with just 10 members and to date the Squadron has more than 100 members. Through the leadership of RADM Leonard Tirol, the Squadron received 3 times of Best Squadron in Western Visayas and also have the honor of holding 3 National Convention.
The Squadron continue to make an impact in the Island by assisting the Philippines Coast Guard in the promotion of safety of life and property at sea, in the protection of the marine environment and its resources, the conduct of maritime search and rescue, the maintenance of aids to navigation, and such other activities that enhance maritime community relations which include civic action, participation under the National Service Training Program (NSTP), youth development, recreational safety and other related activities.
The Vision is a reliable and adequately funded Auxiliary Organization of the PCG efficiently promoting safety of life and property at sea, protecting the marine environment and its resources, conducting maritime search and rescue operations, and developing coastal community participation in MARSAF, MARSAR and MAREP activities through committed and competent volunteers, sufficient equipment, effective training programs and relevant projects.
Objectives of the Squadron:
- To assist in the enforcement of all applicable laws in the high seas and waters of the Philippines.
- To assist in the promotion of safety of life and property.
- To develop the capability of the PCGA following the OTEM Principle (Organize, Train, Equip and Maintain) to effectively implement the four functional areas (MARSAR, MAREP, MARSAF and MCOMREL)
